Icing cookies can be hard! They get smashed in the container, it is too sweet, it has no flavor, etc. etc.
This is my favorite topping for sugar cookies. It hardens nicely, is just the right amount of sweet, and is super duper easy to work with.
Whether you are icing cookies for a holiday, a birthday, or just because, use this frosting recipe!
Ingredients
- 5 tablespoons salted butter, softened
- 3-1/2 to 4 cups powdered sugar (roughly half of a 32 oz. bag)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream (milk is okay too)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, add butter and powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until crumbly.
- Add vanilla extract. While mixing, drizzle in heavy cream 1 tablespoon at a time, allowing about 30 seconds of mixing between each addition. Keep adding cream 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency.
-
Once you have reached your desired consistency, separate into bowls and color the frosting the color of your choice. Add to pastry bags and pipe away! *if frosting ever becomes too thick or dry, get a fork and a little cream or milk, then add to bring the frosting back to the consistency that you desire.*

Buttercream Frosting for Cookies
This recipe is doubled, so it makes quite a bit of frosting! To a mixing bowl, add softened salted butter. Add powdered sugar.
